Solidarity with HBCU Communities

By Kelly Hand

Following a series of bomb threats at over a dozen historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), AAUP president Irene Mulvey issued a statement in early February denouncing such acts of racial terrorism as a continuation of the shameful legacy of violence that has bolstered systemic racism and persistent racial inequity in US society. The statement emphasized the need for faculty, staff, and students to remain safe from fear and intimidation on their campuses and expressed solidarity with HBCU colleagues demanding and working toward a more just society. It also reaffirmed the AAUP’s commitment to dismantling systemic and institutional racism in the Association and in higher education.
