Building a Bargaining Survey, Platform, and Narrative

A workshop for members or staff of collective bargaining chapters interested in honing their approach to communication about proposals at the table, in media, and with the community. Participants will be invited to think about how narrative connects to power in bargaining and their own chapter’s narrative.

Fundamentals of Collective Bargaining

A workshop about the legal framework of contract negotiations for public and private institutions and the mechanics of a strong bargaining team, including team roles, conduct at the table, tracking proposals, and updating members. Members and staff of collective bargaining chapters are welcome.

In this session, collective bargaining chapter members and staff will look at proposal writing and presentation methods that get to the heart of the problem. Participants will also be encouraged to share what they’ve learned from their most successful and challenging proposals.

Monthly Unionist's Roundtable: Contract Language Swap

An informal discussion for collective bargaining chapter members and staff to trade their best contract articles and solicit language on specific issues such as racial equity, gender equity, paid family leave, childcare, accessibility, online learning, non-tenure-track appointments, or whatever is of interest to the group.

Basic Skills for Stewards or Grievance Officers

A session for stewards, grievance officers, or staff looking for a refresher or an introduction to the legal framework of a grievance, as well as how to investigate a case, write a grievance, and prepare for each step. Participants will also be encouraged to share the grievance article in their own CBA. Arbitration hearings will not be covered but may in a future session.

Monthly Unionist's Roundtable: Using Financial Analysis in Bargaining

An informal discussion for members or staff of collective bargaining chapters about ways to use AAUP financial analysis reports strategically at the table and in media during bargaining. Participants will be encouraged to share examples from their own experience and share ideas for future bargaining campaigns.

This is a workshop about communicating with the press at every level, from the campus paper to national outlets. Participants will leave with an understanding of what works, what doesn't, and how to broadcast the heart of the issue.
