Save Our Schools

By Gwendolyn Bradley

An AAUP delegation participated in the Save Our Schools conference and march in Washington, DC, July 28–30. Although the Save Our Schools movement focuses on K–12 education rather than higher education, its goals are closely aligned with those of the AAUP and the Campaign for the Future of Higher Education.

During the conference portion of the event, Nsé Ufot, the AAUP’s government relations officer, and Brian Turner, professor of political science at Randolph-Macon University and chair of the AAUP’s Committee on Government Relations, conducted a workshop on the nuts and bolts of lobbying. And an AAUP contingent participated in the march, joining our K–12 colleagues in calling for an end to the destructive policies and rhetoric that have eroded confidence in our public schools, demoralized teachers, and threaten to reduce education to test preparation.
