Candidate Statements

Dennis Mazzocco, Hofstra-University AAUP (Secretary)

For the past nine years, I served as the AAUP President at Hofstra University, the nation's largest faculty union at a private University. We now represent over 1,000 full-time and adjunct professors.

I will provide leadership and informed support to all CBC Chapters—whether public or private, and to all members of the full-time and contingent professoriate.

The potential loss of agency fees from a negative Janus decision will represent the greatest loss revenue that our professional association has faced in 40 years. However, I am confident our vital organization will prevail.

With 18 years in AAUP leadership, including two terms as CBC Treasurer, and two as an At-large member of the CBC Exec Committee, my commitment to academic freedom, tenure, and shared governance remains as strong as ever.

Brian Gallagher, University of Rhode Island AAUP

I, Brian T. Gallagher, of the University of Rhode Island Chapter of AAUP, confirm that I am willing to stand for election to the office of Member-at-Large of the CBC Executive Committee. I am an Associate Professor at URI’s University Libraries and a member of the URI-AAUP Collective Bargaining Chapter since my hiring in August 2007. At present, I am a member of the Chapter’s Executive Committee, serving the Chapter’s constituents as Member-at-Large. That service includes assisting with membership drives and contributing articles to the Chapter’s newsletter and providing an ear – and, voice – for members and non-members alike. I want to take my AAUP service to the next level, standing up as a representative for my fellow faculty nationally. If elected, I shall insure that your voices are heeded, that your concerns are acknowledged. I shall strive, as Member-at-Large, to help the Executive Committee maintain certainty in these uncertain times.

Paul MacArthur, AAUP Utica College

If you want an experienced, dedicated union activist to serve you on the AAUP-CBC, please support my candidacy.

I’m finishing my second term as President of the AAUP Utica College Collective Bargaining Chapter (AAUP-UC) and will term out in July. I served as the AAUP-UC Vice President for three years before that and was an AAUP-UC negotiator for our current collective bargaining agreement.

In addition to my AAUP-UC work, I’ve been the Assistant National Contract Advisor for the National Writers Union for a decade, have worked as an NWU Grievance Officer, and served two terms as NWU Vice President for External Organizing.

I come from a union family, believe in the labor movement, and am ready to help make a difference as on the AAUP-CBC as a Member At Large.

Noeleen McIlvenna, AAUP Wright State University

I grew up in a teacher’s union family, and that, coupled with my study of the history of American social movements, informs my deep-seated loyalties to both collectivity and education. I have served as Secretary and Contract Administration Officer with AAUP-WSU since 2013 and have served on the Board for the Ohio Conference since 2014. I recently organized and still lead our Contract Campaign, which has been an overwhelming success in mobilizing the faculty and leading them towards strike readiness. In two days, over 80% of our Bargaining Unit responded to a strike authorization vote, and 90% of them chose “Yes”! I have organized a rally and forum, a social media campaign and sponsorship of the local NPR drive-time programming. Building the solidarity of WSU faculty has been a success story, from which I learned a lot — lessons I could bring to CBC.

Patricia Navarra, Hofstra University AAUP

As an adjunct professor who has served the CBC for the last two years, I hope you’ll send me back to the CBC as we stand together to challenge the unimaginable.

Our collective future, part-and full-time, tenured and untenured, public and private, mentor and grad student – depends upon our willingness to organize. The forces which brought us to this moment are organized.  Think about it: adjunct faculty, on national average, now do 75% of the teaching in America’s colleges and universities. This should be of great and urgent concern to all adjunct professors, because when they gut the institution of tenure, there will be no one left with tenure to defend us.

As a Member at Large, I’ve served on election, planning, and awards committees. I’ve sat with the CBC to make hard decisions against a future which is only as uncertain as our willingness to face it down together.
