Organizing Against the Machines

The rapid rollout of generative AI and the spread of AI tools in higher education are creating new challenges in the classroom and beyond. The authors of the four articles that follow provide on-the-ground accounts of local faculty organizing around AI. They document the high stakes of AI on campus—for academic freedom, for faculty governance, for educational quality, and for human labor itself—and how the technology is influencing adjacent domains, from higher education consulting to military research. Together, their stories depict a growing movement that is questioning both the premises and the objectives of certain uses of AI.
