In June, the governing Council of the AAUP elected Samuel Bagenstos to fill its vacant at-large seat. Bagenstos, the Frank G. Millard Professor of Law at the University of Michigan, has published two books and numerous journal articles in the areas of civil rights, labor and employment law, health law, and governance. He has argued four cases before the US Supreme Court and multiple cases before the Michigan Supreme Court. During recent leaves from the university, Bagenstos served in the federal government, including in the Department of Health and Human Services, the Office of Management and Budget, and the Department of Justice. His term on the Council expires in 2028.
The Council voted in September to elect Nikolas Bowie to the vacant Region 5 seat. Bowie is the Louis D. Brandeis Professor of Law at Harvard University and a historian whose research focuses on critical legal histories of democracy in the United States. His scholar ship has appeared in the Harvard Law Review, Law and History Review, Stanford Law Review, Virginia Law Review, and Yale Law Journal. Bowie clerked for Judge Jeffrey Sutton of the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and Justice Sonia Sotomayor of the US Supreme Court. His term on the Council expires in 2026.
