When you think of Massachusetts, what immediately comes to mind? Prominent universities? Diehard sports fans? Notable accents? The American Revolution? How about faculty activism or shared governance? This year, the AAUP’s annual Summer Institute travels to the Bay State to Suffolk University in Boston. With nearly 6.4 million citizens Boston is the tenth largest metropolitan area in the United States and one of the most historically significant cities in the country, offering something for everyone. When not strategizing with fellow faculty activists how to strengthen our profession, you can tour vineyards, explore tranquil islands, take in a ball game or relive US colonial history.
In between your urban explorations, the 2011 Summer Institute provides four jam-packed days of intensive training workshops that will sharpen your leadership and chapter-building skills through discussion, learning, networking and brainstorming with fellow higher education colleagues from across the nation. With sessions ranging from strengthening faculty handbook language to analyzing institutional financial statements, from implementing a comprehensive communications strategy to fighting legislative attacks on higher education, the Summer Institute is the source for training in the arts of faculty advocacy.
