Support for Oakland Teachers

The Executive Committee of the AAUP Collective Bargaining Congress sent a letter to the superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) in California on March 1. The letter declared the AAUP-CBC's support for striking public school teachers and urged the superintendent to come to an agreement with the Oakland Education Association (OEA).

The letter stated,

We believe all teachers deserve the security of a contract, a living wage, class sizes which are conducive to learning, and schools which offer students the dignity of the professional services of nurses, psychologists, and counselors. We believe the OUSD should attempt to improve schools rather than close them. The John Dewey model of public education as a greater good for society includes a stable faculty with a living wage.

The OEA ratified an agreement with the OEA last night and returned to work today.
