AAUP Welcomes New Notre Dame De Namur University Chapter

The faculty at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California formed an NDNU advocacy chapter with the AAUP.

The chapter reports it was inspired to form after changes brought by the NDNU administration in the name of “program prioritization” resulted in dramatic cuts to academic programs and unilateral reorganization of the academic enterprise. Faculty views these changes as violating principles of shared governance. These principles maintain that “the faculty has primary responsibility for such fundamental areas as curriculum, subject matter and methods of instruction”—a principle echoed in NDNU’s Governance Handbook.

Officers of the new chapter include Co-Presidents Betty Friedman, Jean Nyland, Vice-President Robert Poplack, and Secretary-Treasurer Marianne Delaporte.
