2017 Summer Institute

The 2017 AAUP/AAUP-CBC Summer Institute is coming to the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio. From July 27 to July 30, more than two hundred other higher education professionals from around the country will gather for four days of exciting workshops and special programs. We bring in organizers, data analysts, seasoned campaigners, and issue experts to build your skills as an advocate for AAUP principles, collective bargaining, and higher education.

AAUP Member – You are an AAUP member staying in a residence hall

Commuter AAUP Member – You are an AAUP member staying somewhere besides the residence hall on campus (this category includes attendees who choose to stay in a hotel)

Non-Member – You currently are not a dues-paying member of the AAUP, and you are staying in the residence hall

Commuter Non-Member – You currently are not a dues-paying member of the AAUP, and you will stay somewhere besides the residence hall on campus (this category includes attendees who choose to stay in a hotel)

*Campus Guest – A guest who shares a room with an attendee (such as a spouse or partner)

*Commuter Guest – A guest who stays off campus but may opt to participate in some meals and activities (but not workshops)

*Individuals registered as guests to the Summer Institute are not permitted to attend workshops or the plenary session.

What Does Registration Cover?

Your registration fee covers:

  • all workshop materials
  • three nights in a single-occupancy room in a residence hall on campus (except for commuter registrants)
  • breakfast on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
  • lunch on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
  • opening reception on Thursday evening 

All registration fees are due at the time of registration. If you select “check” as your method of payment, please make it payable to the AAUP and mail it to the national office within five (5) days of your registration:  AAUP, Attn: Summer Institute, 1133 19th St., NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC  20036. Your early payments make our record-keeping much easier. All fees must be paid or you will not be permitted to check in.

If you are being sponsored by a chapter or conference, please have the chapter/conference president or executive director forward a letter to the national office on chapter/conference letterhead stating that your registration is being covered by the chapter/conference. What is Not Included in My Registration Fee?

  • dinner Friday and Saturday
  • optional activities (see below)
  • additional nights in the residence hall
  • residence hall lodging if you choose to be a commuter
  • hotel costs

Cancellation and Substitution:

We’re sorry you can’t make it! All cancellations and substitutions should be submitted in writing to Christopher Simeone at csimeone@aaup.org or (202) 737-5526 (fax) as soon as possible. Cancellations received prior to Friday, June 16, 2017, will be eligible for a refund minus the $35 processing fee. For cancellations received after June 16, we will not be able to fully refund your registration fees.

All substitutions should be submitted in writing to Christopher Simeone before July 10, 2017. We will be unable to substitute attendees after this date.

Registration:

Registration will be open Wednesday, July 26, from 3:00pm until 7:00pm, and Thursday, July 27, from 8:00am until 6:00pm. If you will be arriving after 6:00pm on Thursday, please contact Catherine Everitt to schedule a time to pick-up your registration packet. Registration location will be at the Cinema of TUC (Tangeman University Center).

**PLEASE BE AWARE: The University of Cincinnati campus is built on a hill. Some routes between buildings will require attendees to use stairs or ramps.**

Optional activities:

This year we have arranged two optional activities for Friday night and one for Saturday night. 

Friday Night Option 1: Brewery Tour Bus

Join your fellow attendees and experience Cincinnati’s long and rich tradition of beer brewing on the Cincy Brew Bus. Tour includes a ride to three breweries and samples of beer at each brewery visited, a Bavarian soft pretzel, and a tour behind the scenes. The tour will last between 3-4 hours and will be infused with local brewing history, beer education, trivia, prizes, fun facts and general knowledge from the trained tour guides and beeristas.

Tickets for the Cincy Brew Bus tour are $75; attendees will be picked up on campus at 6:30 pm from McMicken Circle. After the tour ends, attendees will be dropped off on campus. Please contact Catherine Everitt at ceveritt@aaup.org if you plan to bring a guest.

*If you decide to stay in downtown Cincinnati after the tour ends, you are responsible for notifying our staff on the tour and for your own transportation back to campus/hotel.*

Friday Night Option 2: Dinner Cruise

Join your fellow attendees for an evening filled to the brim with festive cuisine, entertainment, and live performance onboard the Belle of Cincinnati, a majestic, Victorian-inspired cruise ship. Each climate-controlled deck includes a full bar, dance floor and elevator for fun on every level. The upper deck is open-air, perfect for watching the scenery along the Ohio River sail by.

Board the Belle of Cincinnati at 6:30pm and cruise around the Ohio River from 7:30pm-10:00pm. Tickets for the dinner cruise are $75. Please contact Catherine Everitt at ceveritt@aaup.org if you plan to bring a guest.

Please note:  Roundtrip transportation to the dinner cruise is included in the ticket price and will leave campus at 6:00pm from McMicken Circle. After the cruise ends, transportation back to campus will leave Newport Landing at 10:15pm. Attendees not on the bus returning to campus are responsible for their own transportation back to campus.

Optional Saturday Evening Activity

This year we have an additional activity for your Saturday evening.

Join your fellow attendees and watch FC Cincinnati soccer team take on the Rochester Rhinos at Nippert Stadium. Tickets are $15, which includes a $5 food voucher at the stadium. No transportation is needed to get to Nippert Stadium as it is centrally located on campus—it’s right next to TUC and adjacent to the CRC residence hall.

Fun facts: FC Cincinnati has become one of the most supported soccer clubs in minor leagues soccer in the United States and fans display their support by painting Nippert in a shade of orange and blue attire.

On-Campus Accommodations:

Your registration fee includes lodging for three nights (Thursday, Friday, Saturday) in CRC (Campus Recreation Center) Hall. A limited number of rooms are available for an additional fee for those wishing to arrive on Wednesday. CRC Hall offers suite-style units containing two single bedrooms, a shared bathroom, entry space, microwave, and a refrigerator/freezer unit. Each attendee will share a unit with another Summer Institute attendee and will have their own single occupancy bedroom with one shared bathroom between two rooms. Each bedroom will be furnished with an extra-long twin bed, desk, and closet space and will also have sheets, a pillow and pillow case, blanket, and towels when you arrive. All rooms are air conditioned.

Hotel:

If you prefer to stay in a hotel, there is a room block for our Summer Institute attendees at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Cincinnati Uptown/University Area located at 2500 S Market Street, Cincinnati, OH. Please be sure to mention you are with the AAUP Summer Institute and the dates you plan to stay. The group rate of $175 per night (plus taxes) is good until June 24, 2017, depending on availability. We encourage you to make your reservation early due to a shortage of hotel rooms during these days.

Getting to the University of Cincinnati:

Parking on campus:

You can pre-order a parking pass on your Summer Institute registration form. The parking passes are valid up to a week and they are $20.
