2016 Summer Institute

SUMMER INSTITUTE REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED.

The 2016 AAUP/AAUP-CBC Summer Institute is coming to Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. From July 21 to July 24, more than two hundred other higher education professionals from around the country will gather for four days of exciting workshops and special programs. 

We bring in organizers, data analysts, seasoned campaigners, and issue experts to build your skills as an advocate for AAUP principles, collective bargaining, and higher education. Our interactive workshops will give you the tools you need to make change on your campus. Use the hashtag #AAUPSI in social media posts to share memories and important messages with other attendees and those who cannot make it! AAUP Member: You are an AAUP member staying in a residence hall.

Commuter AAUP Member: You are an AAUP member staying somewhere besides the residence hall on campus (this category includes attendees who choose to stay in a hotel).

Nonmember: You currently are not a dues-paying member of the AAUP, and you are staying in the residence hall.

Commuter Nonmember: You currently are not a dues-paying member of the AAUP, and you will stay somewhere besides the residence hall on campus (this category includes attendees who choose to stay in a hotel).

Campus Guest: A guest accompanying an attendee (such as a spouse or partner). Includes residence hall accommodations and meals as described below. Individuals registered as guests to the Summer Institute are not permitted to attend seminars or workshops.

Commuters who wish to bring a guest to meals or the Friday night cruise should pay for each individual activity at registration.

What Does Registration Cover?

  • all workshop materials
  • three nights in a single-occupancy room in a residence hall on campus
  • breakfast on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
  • lunch on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
  • opening reception on Thursday evening

All registration fees are due at the time of registration. If you select “check” as your method of payment, please make it payable to the AAUP and mail it to the national office within five (5) days of your registration:

Your early payments make our record-keeping much easier. All fees must be paid or you will not be permitted to check in.

If you are being sponsored by a chapter or conference, please have the chapter/conference president or executive director forward a letter to the national office on chapter/conference letterhead stating that your registration is being covered by the chapter/conference. We ask that all outstanding Summer Institute balances be paid by July 5, 2016.

What is Not Included in the Registration Fee?

  • dinner Friday and Saturday
  • optional activity (see below)
  • additional nights in the residence hall
  • hotel costs

Cancellation and Substitution

We’re sorry you can’t make it! All cancellations and substitutions should be submitted in writing to Christopher Simeone at csimeone@aaup.org or (202) 737-5526 (fax) as soon as possible. Cancellations received prior to Friday, June 17, 2016 will be eligible for a refund minus the $35 processing fee. For all cancellations received after June 17, we will not be able to fully refund your registration fees.

All substitutions should be submitted in writing to Christopher Simeone before July 4, 2016. We will be unable to substitute attendees after this date.

Check In 

A check in desk will be open Wednesday, July 20, from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm, and Thursday, July 21, from 8:00 am until 6:00 pm. The check-in desk will be located in the Broadway dormitory building (exact location TBD).

If you will be arriving after 6:00 pm on Thursday, please contact Alexis Pearlstein to schedule a time to pick up your registration packet. 

Optional Activity

For an additional fee, you can participate in an optional excursion that we’ve planned for our Summer Institute attendees.

Join us Friday night aboard the Portland Spirit and cruise around the Willamette River for an evening of festive cuisine, entertainment, and live performances! Please note, boarding begins at 6:30 pm and the boat will cruise from 7:00 to 9:30 pm.

Tickets are $75 per person and include a 2.5 hour cruise, all landing fees and taxes, an entrée selected by each guest on board, house salad, bread, house dessert, coffee, hot tea, fountain sodas, live piano music and service gratuities. Each attendee will also receive a drink ticket for beer or house wine. Salmon Street Springs (the loading location) is located .7 miles from the University Place Hotel. A shuttle will not be provided, but staff will be on hand to help coordinate cab pickups for those who opt not to walk. Walking directions are here.

On Campus Accommodations

Your registration fee includes lodging for three nights (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday) in one of the university dorms. Additionally, a limited number of rooms are available for those wishing to arrive on Wednesday. All participants will stay in Broadway Hall, a newly renovated residence hall consisting of studio apartments. Each attendee will have a private bedroom and bathroom. Each bedroom will be furnished with a bed, desk, and dresser and will also have sheets, a blanket, a pillow with pillow case, and towels when you arrive. Please remember to bring your toiletries as these will not be provided. Also, please note, the dorms are not air conditioned, but a limited number of fans will be made available to guests.

Hotel

If you prefer to stay in a hotel, there is a room block for our Summer Institute attendees at the University Place Hotel, located at 310 SW Lincoln Street, Portland, OR 97201. You can make a reservation by calling 1-866-845-4647 or 503-221-0140. Please be sure to mention you are with the AAUP Summer Institute. The group rate is $94 per night and is available until June 20, 2016. Please note that the hotel block for Wednesday, July 20 is full.

Getting to Portland State University

The residence hall is located at 625 SW Jackson Street, Portland, OR 97201, and the dining hall is located across the street at 1912 SW 6th Avenue, Portland, OR 97201. The campus is located roughly 14 miles from the airport, and is situated on a light-rail line. If you opt for the light-rail, please note you will have to switch from the red to the green line. On-campus parking will be available at a rate of $15.00/day. You can purchase parking permits on arrival at the Summer Housing and Conference office.
