One Story That Grew a Life of its Own

On July 22, 2010, AAUP president Cary Nelson discussed BP, academic freedom, and the perils of corporate funding in "BP and Academic Freedom" with Inside Higher Ed.  This story was followed by interviews with the BBC, the Associated Press, and United Press International.

Stories quoting the AAUP president and citing the organization then appeared in such countries as Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Mexico,  The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Romania, Spain, Turkey, and Venezuela..

As a result, the Congressional Committee on Energy and Commerce and its Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment wrote to BP (.pdf) requesting all contracts bearing on Gulf oil  spill research, citing news reports that quote AAUP concerns about academic freedom.
