2010 AAUP Updates

In an open letter to Antioch's new president and the college's stakeholders, the AAUP reminds the college of its responsibilities.

AAUP chapters and conferences must file 990-N postcards by October 15 to retain tax-exempt status.

The Goldwater Institute report Administrative Bloat at American Universities: The Real Reason for High Costs in Higher Education highlights dramatic growth from 1993–2007 in administrative positions in universities as compared to positions in instruction, research, and service.

 October 7, 2010, has been designated as a national day of action to defend public education and to protest its privatization.

Update: H.R. 1586 was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives. 

The AAUP has joined the National Wildlife Federation and prominent scientists and researchers in an open letter to attorney general Eric Holder and BP CEO Robert Dudley asking for full public release of all scientific data related to the Gulf Coast oil disaster. (8/3)

The Pennsylvania State Senate has unanimously passed a law requiring faculty members to choose "the least expensive, educationally sound textbooks." This vague and possibly unenforceable standard undermines the right of faculty members to select the best textbook. 

A few days after adjunct faculty filed a petition with the NLRB, the university “non-renewed” all of its fifty-plus adjunct faculty members.

The AAUP has awarded its Alexander Meiklejohn Award for Academic Freedom to Patricia Ann McGuire, president of Trinity Washington University.

The AAUP supports Senator Harkin’s Keep Our Educators Working Act, now being considered by the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. Education jobs are essential to our economic, social, and political health and to our vitality as a nation.

Delegates to the Ninety-sixth Annual Meeting of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) voted on June 12 to place Clark Atlanta University (GA) and the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston on the AAUP’s list of censured administrations. In addition, the delegates voted to sanction Antioch University (OH).

The AAUP supports the National Unemployment Compensation Initiative, designed to help eligible contingent faculty obtain unemployment compensation between academic terms. 

 During his remarkable life, Glenn, Professor Emeritus at Auburn University,  was active in the civil rights movement and advocated for the AAUP at every opportunity. Please consider a donation to the AAUP Endowment Fund in Glenn’s memory. 

Today is the last day for small AAUP chapters and conferences to file their 990-N tax return with the IRS.  

Federal law requires the election notice, which will be part of the mail ballot package, to be mailed to each ASC member at their last known home address.

The AAUP's Bowling Green University chapter filed a petition for a union election in February, after months of grassroots organizing involving dozens of BGSU faculty and supported by other AAUP chapters in Ohio as well as the AAUP national staff.

Since 1981, the annual Professors of the Year program has honored a select group of U.S. professors who excel as educators and influence the lives and careers of their students. 

The AAUP's general secretary has authorized an investigation into alleged violations of academic freedom, tenure, and due process at Louisiana State University. 

The AAUP's Collective Bargaining Congress today issued this statement in response to the Association of Governing Boards’ newly released "Statement on Institutional Governance."
