March 4 was a day of action for faculty and other supporters of higher education. Participants held rallies, demonstrations, teach-ins, and other types of events at campuses and other locations across California, and seventeen other states.

The AAUP Supports California Faculty

Members of the California Faculty Association, an AAUP affiliate, overwhelmingly approved unprecedented system-wide strikes. The vote came after two years of unsuccessful bargaining with the California State University administration, where administrators are pushing for draconian cuts to the instructional budget. Ninety-five percent of members voted to authorize CSU’s instructional faculty, librarians, counselors, and coaches to initiate rolling walkouts if the administration continues to demand concessions.

Tentative Agreement Between CFA & CSU

The California Faculty Association (CFA) and the California State University announced a tentative agreement on the faculty contract. "It's a fair agreement in the context of hard times," said Lillian Taiz, of the California Faculty Association, "We are disappointed we were not able to get a raise, but that wasn't in the cards.

Fund Teaching, Not Perks

 As the California Faculty Association plans one-day strikes at two campuses, the AAUP issued a statement of support.
