The "Academic Bill of Rights"- Coming to Your Campus

Legislative proposals with this righteous-sounding title have been introduced in 28 states over the past four years. While no state legislature has actually adopted the proposals, their proponents have not given up. Similar proposals may be offered on your campus by student organizations or even student governments. It is important that both you and your students understand what's involved in this "Academic Bill of Rights," and the new-for-2007 ACTA version that they call "Intellectual Diversity" legislation.

CSU Senate Academic Freedom for Students

November 11-12, 2004: RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of the California State University (CSU), recognize that the academic freedom of students rests first upon their access to a high quality education and their right to pursue a field of study that they deem appropriate and desirable

SUNY Senate Resolution on the Academic Bill of Rights

October 29, 2005: Resolution "that the University Faculty Senate of SUNY strongly oppose the proposed "Academic Bill of Rights" and urges the Board of Trustees to reject it as policy."

April 2, 2005: The North Carolina Conference of the American Association of University Professors calls on state legislators to oppose Senate Bill 1139 because the Academic Bill of Rights proposes to remove academic expertise as the standard for decisions about teaching and research at universities.
