By Ezra Deutsch-Feldman

Angela Hewett has joined the AAUP staff as director of the Department of Organizing and Services. Over the last nine years Hewett has worked in a variety of roles within the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) at both the national and the local level, most recently as staff coordinator with SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West. She previously served as an assistant professor of English at George Washington University, where she helped organize a bargaining unit of more than 1,600 contingent faculty members. She has also had teaching and administrative experience at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, where she earned her PhD in English literature and later directed the University College writing program for nontraditional students. She writes, “I am very excited to be returning to work with members of my own profession, and I look forward to developing the AAUP’s national organizing program.”

Michael Mauer, the former director of the department, will continue at the AAUP as a part-time senior labor adviser.
