2005: Resolution Concerning Membership Status
In response to a question about the "active" status of a part-time member who no longer has a teaching position, the Council approved the following resolution, as recommended by the Executive Committee, to interpret the AAUP Constitution regarding this matter:
Whereas a question has arisen concerning whether contingent faculty who may either be retired or currently unemployed are eligible to run for AAUP office; and
Whereas it is the duty of the national Council to interpret the AAUP Constitution;
Therefore, be it resolved that the national Council clarifies this issue by expressing its constitutional interpretation that any contingent or part-time faculty member once admitted to active member status retains that status by continuing to make regular dues payments, and that any such faculty member would be eligible to run for AAUP office.
