Clarification

Clarification To the Editor:

I want to clarify the item in the January–February issue of Academe about the University of Rhode Island part-time faculty vote to join the AAUP (“Rhode Island Part-Time Faculty Join AAUP”). URI has three separate collective bargaining units affiliated with the AAUP: the new part-time faculty unit, the graduate assistant unit, and the full-time faculty unit. The part-time unit will be able to elect officers, collect dues, and bargain with the administration to represent the best interests of its members as the established units already do. We are all proud to be part of the AAUP, and the full-time chapter was pleased to be able to support the efforts of part-time faculty to organize their chapter. Soon all faculty on campus will have the means to address their working conditions, benefits, and salaries.
