Slight Decline in Federal Research
By Gwendolyn Bradley
Funding Federal funding for research and development in academic science and engineering declined in 2006 for the first time in almost a quarter century, the National Science Foundation announced this past fall. The report of a decline, which is in inflation-adjusted dollars, comes from a survey of universities conducted by the foundation. Federally funded academic research and development expenditures rose 2.9 percent in fiscal 2006, which is less than the rate of inflation. The federal government remains the largest source of academic research and development funding, on average accounting for more than 60 percent since 1972.
