Excluded Scholar Granted Visa

John (Yoannis) Milios, a professor of Marxist economic theory at the National Technical University of Athens, was granted a visa this spring to enter the United States after having been abruptly excluded from the country in 2006. Milios, who had earlier attended academic conferences in the United States on five separate occasions, was intercepted in June of that year upon his arrival in the country en route to a conference at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He was questioned at the airport about his political ideas and affiliations and then sent back to Greece. (See “Another Professor Barred From Entering the United States” in the September–October 2006 issue of Academe.) Milios addressed the AAUP annual meeting in June.
