State and Local Support Rebounds
By Gwendolyn Bradley
State and local support for public higher education, which had fallen since 2001, rebounded in fiscal 2006, according to a report issued in March by the State Higher Education Executive Officers. Support for each full-time-equivalent student, measured in constant dollars, was $6,325 in fiscal 2006, a 5.1 percent increase over the previous year and the first constant dollar increase since 2001, the study says. Despite the rebound, fiscal 2006 levels are still below fiscal 2001 levels. The rebound comes after five difficult years during which enrollment increased by 14.8 percent, but state and local support for each student fell by 14.2 percent. Tuition increases made up some of the difference. The full report is available on the Web at http://www.sheeo.org/finance/shef-home.htm.
