Faculty Divided Over Institute

Faculty at Southern Methodist University are  divided on whether the university should go forward with plans for a George W.  Bush library and policy institute; the Faculty Senate in March had a tie vote  on a resolution calling on the university to disassociate itself from the  project. The university won out over other institutions that also sought to  have the library, and administrators have said that it will reflect well on the  institution and attract researchers. However, some faculty were concerned by  reports that the affiliated institute will not be governed by the university,  will report to a foundation controlled by the Bush family, and will be  dedicated to scholarship that supports Bush's views. A partisan institute,  critics say, is inappropriate for a university and antithetical to good  scholarship.
