Reflections on a Career
Richard C. Ziemer
To the Editor:
Reading Nancy Westerfield’s article in the January–February issue about the Necchi sewing machine was a delight and made me think of a young woman in my speech class this term who brought her electric sewing machine to class for a demonstration speech and showed the class how to sew a pillow.
I could pick up on all the feelings Westerfield expressed, from travel and poverty to both sad and happy reflections. What briskness and power in every line! It would be difficult for me to select an item to identify me in my forty-one years of college teaching at the same institution.
Perhaps my student will have just as much lifelong pleasure from her sewing machine as Westerfield did from hers. Thank you for publishing such a wonderful article.
