Academe Appoints New Book Review Editor
By Gwendolyn Bradley
Kristen Renn has been named editor of Academe’s book review section. Renn is associate professor in the Department of Educational Administration at Michigan State University. Her research and teaching focus on issues related to diversity, equity, and identity in higher education, particularly matters of race and ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation. She has held previous appointments at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education, and Brown University.
Renn replaces William Tierney, Wilbur Kieffer Professor of Higher Education at the University of Southern California and director of USC’s Center for Higher Education Policy Analysis, who served as Academe book review editor for six years.
“Bill Tierney has an incomparable grasp of the higher education scene nationally, and he has made sure that Academe has the best reviewers for the most important volumes being published on contemporary higher education issues. We are extremely grateful for his years of unselfish service,” says Paula Krebs, Academe’s editor. “Kristen Renn has already begun to build on the firm foundation provided by Bill’s years as book review editor. She brings to the position a broad knowledge of higher education concerns in many different areas, and we are excited to begin working with her.” Renn is the recipient of a 2005 Excellence in Teaching Award from the MSU College of Education and coordinator of a national doctoral fellowship program that supports scholarship on postsecondary access and success.
“I am very glad to have the opportunity to continue Bill Tierney’s practice of informing and provoking discourse across diverse professional contexts by bringing critical attention to new writing on, about, and bearing on higher education,” says Renn.
Like the feature section, book reviews in Academe analyze issues in higher education from the perspective of faculty members. Readers who are interested in proposing books for review should send an e-mai .
