Industry Support for Academic Research Rose in 2005
By Gwendolyn Bradley
Industry funding for research and development in academic science and engineering fields rebounded in 2005 from a three-year decline and grew by 7.7 percent to a record high of $2.3 billion, according to the National Science Foundation’s Survey of Research and Development Expenditures at Universities and Colleges, released in February.
However, the share of total academic research and development funded by industry—5 percent in 2005—remains small and is dropping. The federal government provides the vast majority of funds, followed by state and local governments and institutions, although the federal contribution rose by less in 2005 than in previous years.
