Academic Freedom Handbook
By Gwendolyn Bradley
An anthropologists’ group in January issued a new handbook on academic freedom that may interest faculty in many different disciplines. The handbook, titled Academic Freedom and Professional Responsibility After 9/11, discusses escalating threats to academic freedom and provides practical advice on preventive strategies and on how to proceed when academic freedom is threatened. The handbook was issued by the Task Force on Middle Eastern Anthropology, a group founded in 2002 to “preserve a space for open discussion on the Middle East/North Africa/Southwest Asia and academic freedom.” It is available at http://www.meanthro.org/handbook.htm.
