Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans Universities

The report of the AAUP’s Special Committee on Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans Universities, running well over a hundred draft pages and encompassing investigations of issues of academic freedom and tenure at five New Orleans universities, was approved by Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure in January and sent in draft form to the concerned parties in New Orleans with an invitation for corrections and comments. In addition to numerous replies from faculty bodies and individual involved professors, detailed responses were received from the chief officers of the five universities, the general counsel of one relevant university system and the president of another, and Louisiana’s commissioner of higher education. The report’s final text is now being prepared for publication with the May–June issue of Academe.
