Note: Pedigree refers to where the archaeologists in the study earned their bachelor’s degrees. Affiliation refers to the institutional type at which the archaeologists hold faculty appointments. For the statistically minded, table 1’s c2=14.3, df=1, (p<.01). Standardized residuals exceed 1 , the conventional indicator of significant departure from equal probability, only in the two cells that represent liberal arts colleges. The twenty-seven archaeologists employed at such colleges who lack liberal arts pedigrees yield a residual value of -1.2. The negative sign means that liberal arts colleges employ fewer non-liberal arts pedigrees than expected. The eleven archaeologists employed at liberal arts colleges who have liberal arts pedigrees yield a residual of 3.4.
