New Work-and-Family Resource Available on Web
By Anita Levy
The AAUP Committee on Women in the Academic Profession recently released a new presentation, “Faculty Have Families Too,” highlighting current research on work and family issues in academia and the best practices recommended in the AAUP’s 2001 Statement of Principles on Family Responsibilities and Academic Work.
“Five years ago, the AAUP identified best practices for campuses seeking to create family-friendly workplaces, but policy statements alone cannot change campus climates. This presentation is designed to help concerned faculty and AAUP chapters evaluate their own campus policies and initiate debate on how those policies can be improved,” says committee chair Ann Higginbotham. The presentation also explores the role of work and family policies in encouraging the hiring and retention faculty. “Faculty Have Families Too” can be used by faculty members as part of their own presentations to facilitate campus discussion concerning the creation of family-friendly academic workplaces.
