Contingent Faculty Index Available
By Monica F. Jacobe
The AAUP’s first listing of contingent faculty across the country is available on the AAUP Web site. The report consists of an article on trends in the use of contingent faculty, aggregate tables showing contingent faculty use by type of institution, and a listing of contingent faculty numbers at individual institutions. The institutional listing includes numbers of full-time faculty by tenure status, part-time faculty, and graduate student employees. Wherever possible, distinctions are made between research and teaching faculty.
In an attempt to be as comprehensive as possible, the report draws on the Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) rather than the AAUP’s own compensation survey. IPEDS includes comprehensive information on the number of graduate students who are paid instructors and researchers in the academy and differentiates between “visiting” researchers and teachers on staff at an institution. These elements are key to a full statistical picture of contingent academic labor, and IPEDS is the best national source for such details.
A limited number of print copies is available, and the report is available in pdf format . Institutions can purchase customized reports for a fee through the AAUP’s research office.
