Chapters and Conferences Support Capital Campaign
By Martin D. Snyder
AAUP chapters from around the country have begun to pledge their support for the Association’s Campaign for the Common Good. Some have dipped directly into their treasuries while others have initiated person-to-person campus campaigns.
Collective bargaining chapters at Oakland University, the University of Delaware, and the University of Rhode Island have made substantial campaign pledges. Oakland University, after making a leadership pledge of $12,000 last year, has increased its pledge to $25,000. The University of Delaware and University of Rhode Island chapters have also pledged $25,000 to the campaign.
Gifts to the Campaign for the Common Good at the $25,000 level are eligible for a matching donation from a $250,000 fund pledged by James E. Rogers, chancellor of the University and Community College System of Nevada. Several other chapters are now considering gifts to the campaign at the $25,000 level. Other collective bargaining chapter contributions include a $2,000 gift from the Bard College chapter and $1,000 from the United Academics of Vermont.
Non-collective-bargaining chapters are also supporting the Association’s capital campaign. The University of Minnesota chapter has made a pledge of $10,000. At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and at the University of Michigan, AAUP leaders have spearheaded campus drives to raise awareness of the Campaign for the Common Good and to solicit individual pledges of support from faculty colleagues. At the University of Illinois, individual faculty members have pledged a combined total of $30,000, making UI the leader in chapter campaign contributions to date. At the University of Michigan, Peggy Hollingsworth, a member of the Association’s Development Committee, has organized a campus campaign designed to raise $25,000. A bequest pledge of $10,000 from AAUP stalwart Wilfred Kaplan has jump-started the Michigan campaign. (For more on the Kaplan bequest, see “AAUP Named in Bequest.“)
AAUP state conferences have also stepped up to the plate to support the Association’s capital campaign. The Michigan conference has taken the lead with a $4,000 contribution. The Illinois and Tennessee conferences as well as the Nevada Faculty Alliance have pledged $2,000. The Virginia conference has pledged $1,000.
Chapter and conference contributions are critical to the success of the capital campaign. They demonstrate deep and broad membership support and lend credibility to the campaign. Corporate and foundation donors look to the level of membership support when considering their own decisions to support the Campaign for the Common Good.
