AAUP to Survey Retirement Benefits

The AAUP’s Committee on Retirement announced at its spring meeting plans to update The Survey of Faculty Retirement Policies published in 2000. “The 2000 survey sought information about changes in university retirement programs following the end in January 1994 of mandatory retirement for tenured faculty,” explains committee chair Janet West. “The current survey will go beyond that goal to explore how policies have changed in light of the fact that a large wave of faculty retirements is anticipated, or may in fact already be occurring.”

The survey will provide comparative information on retirement incentive plans, phased retirement plans, and health insurance coverage for retirees. It aims to help institutions learn how other colleges and universities are responding to retirement-related issues and assist them and their faculty members in evaluating and improving their own programs. The committee anticipates mailing the survey instrument to a national sample of colleges and universities this fall and publishing its findings in fall 2006.

The TIAA-CREF Institute will underwrite the cost of the survey, and the following organizations will co-sponsor it with the AAUP: the American Association of Community Colleges, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the American Council on Education, the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources, and the National Association of College and University Business Officers.
