1940 Statement Endorsed By Three Additional Groups

The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) announced in May that its board had formally endorsed the 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure. It was the first accrediting agency to do so. “NCATE’s importance to teacher education is unequalled; hence its endorsement helps ensure a central role of academic freedom in teacher education,” says Roger Bowen, the AAUP’s general secretary. “We applaud the effort of Arthur Wise, NCATE president, who brought this matter to the board.”

Also endorsing the statement this past year were the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and the Society for the Study of Social Biology. The statement, issued jointly by the AAUP and the Association of American Colleges and Universities, has been endorsed by more than 180 groups.
