Academe Gets New Editor
By Wendi Maloney
Paula Krebs, an English professor at Wheaton College, Massachusetts, was appointed editor of Academe effective March 1. Lawrence Hanley, who served as editor from 2002 to 2005, announced his intention to step down last fall.
Krebs, who just completed her second term as English department chair, says she plans to continue Academe's focus on the work life of faculty as well as on the economic, political, and cultural climate in higher education today. "Academe is the place that AAUP members and others interested in post-secondary education in the United States turn to take the pulse of the professoriate on key issues of the day, from minority hiring and retention to faculty-staff relations to compensation," Krebs comments. "Not a journal, not a newsletter, Academe is a magazine, one that can link faculty members as a community and push us to think about the cutting-edge issues in our profession. I'm excited about the possibilities."
Krebs is a member of the executive committee of the Wheaton College AAUP chapter and has served as chapter president. She also serves on the executive committee of the Association of Departments of English, which is the Modern Language Association's organization for departmental administrators. Krebs holds a Ph.D. from Indiana University and has a newspaper background that includes editing and sports writing. She is a founding editor of the journal Feminist Teacher and has worked as an editor for the National Science Teachers Association. She has written and published on many topics, including Victorian literature and culture, postcolonial studies, and athletics in higher education.
"Paula Krebs has exactly the experience and skills that the AAUP needs to help us address the problems confront-ing higher education. Her creativity will be one of our greatest assets," comments Roger Bowen, the AAUP's general secretary.
