Global Higher Education Rankings Issued
By Gwendolyn Bradley
The United States higher education system is one of the least affordable among its peers, according to a report released in April by the Educational Policy Institute. The report, Global Higher Education Rankings 2005, compared the affordability and accessibility of higher education in fifteen countries, including Japan, New Zealand, Australia, the United States, Canada, and ten in Europe. The rankings compare data on student costs resources available to students to cover costs, and participation in higher education.
The United States scored relatively well on accessibility, which was measured by determining the percentage of college-age people enrolled in college, rates of degree completion, gender parity, and participation of students from different socioeconomic backgrounds.
The study found that affordability and accessibility were not linked as strongly as some analysts believe; only Finland and the Netherlands were both highly affordable and highly accessible.
