Summer Institute Invigorates and Informs

The 2004 AAUP Summer Institute was held July 29-August 1 at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania. The institute, which is co-sponsored by the AAUP's Assembly of State Conferences and Collective Bargaining Congress, offered sessions on faculty handbooks, chapter and conference leadership, lobbying in the context of state fiscal woes, higher education data, communications campaigns, the new academic labor system, and other topics.

"The Summer Institute is an inspiring and invigorating experience," says Sheila Teahan of Michigan State University. "The atmosphere is casual and relaxed, and the excellent seminars are intense and informative. One meets colleagues from a diverse array of institutions across the country, and one has the opportunity to interact with national experts in intellectual property, governance issues, and the like. I would like to go every year."

As always, the institute enabled participants to meet AAUP members from other states, discuss problems, find solutions, and share insights. Social activities were also offered, including a group excursion to Pocono Downs, a local harness racetrack.
