Magazine Cover Critique

To the Editor:

I greatly enjoyed Paul Many's article about the superficial world of college brochures in the July-August issue. His rule that brochures show "small groups of students composed of at least one Asian, one African American, one Caucasian, and one of indeterminate ethnicity" has apparently been adopted by Academe, as can be seen by the cover on that issue of the magazine. Of the faculty shown, there are two Asians, one old, one young (although the young man could perhaps qualify for the indeterminate ethnicity slot); one African American; three Caucasian women, one blonde, one brunette, and one with white hair; two Caucasian men, again one young and one old; and finally one androgynous-looking individual (another candidate for the indeterminate slot?).
