Scholarly Group Issues Recruiting Recommendations

The Modern Language Association (MLA) has issued guidelines for good practice in recruiting and retaining faculty of color in the humanities. The MLA recommends that departments consider creating positions focused on literature written by people of color, advertise open positions in nontraditional venues, and provide mentors for junior faculty of color. In addition, departments should ensure that evaluation processes are not unintentionally biased. The guidelines note that because faculty teaching literature by people of color often must create new curricula, these faculty members may face a disproportionate number of new course preparations; they may also tend to pursue scholarship in areas unfamiliar to colleagues; and because most institutions have relatively few faculty members of color, such faculty may be asked to serve on a disproportionate number of committees. The full guidelines are available at the MLA Web site <http://www.mla.org>.
