Egyptian Scholar Acquitted In Third Trial
In March, Egypt's highest court acquitted sociology professor Saad Eddin Ibrahim of tarnishing Egypt's reputation and of committing other offenses. In two previous trials on the same charges, Ibrahim was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment with hard labor. The charges against Ibrahim were rooted in his work as the director of the Ibn Khaldun Center for Developmental Research which was closed by Egyptian authorities after Ibrahim's arrest in 2000. One of the center's projects attempted to increase voter participation in Egypt, and the center criticized voting irregularities in Egyptian elections. The AAUP, along with a wide array of scholars, human rights activists, and Western governments, protested the Egyptian government's treatment of Ibrahim.
