Faculty Successfully Oppose Presidential Candidate
Mars Hill College dropped plans to hire Richard Brewer as president in May after the faculty voted 72 to 0, with two abstentions, to oppose his candidacy. Faculty at the Baptist-related college thought that Brewer was too conservative and that his leadership might damage the climate for academic freedom. Brewer had a long association with Charleston Southern University, another Baptist-affiliated institution viewed by many as more conservative than Mars Hill. The problem surfaced early in the presidential search process when, a professor told the Chronicle of Higher Education, an outside company hired to conduct the search tailored its selection of candidates to the wishes of a few members of the presidential search committee. Opposition intensified after Brewer visited the campus in April.
