AAUP Names New Academe Editor

The AAUP has named Lawrence Hanley of the City College of the City University of New York (CUNY) editor of Academe. Ellen Schrecker, the magazine’s former editor, stepped down recently after four years of service.

Hanley, a faculty member in City College’s English department, says he plans to continue Academe’s tradition of analysis and advocacy. "Universities and colleges are in a state of fundamental transformation," he comments. "Faculty need a guide to these changes and a resource for responding to them. Academe will serve them as they grapple with perennial and new issues in the profession." He plans to publish theme issues on academic science, the public perception of faculty work, the globalization of academic knowledge, and other topics.

Hanley, who serves as City College’s ombudsperson, has been active in the college’s faculty senate and the Professional Staff Congress, the union representing CUNY’s faculty and staff. He holds degrees from Franklin and Marshall College and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has written and published on modern American literature, working-class literature, technology and teaching, and the politics of higher education.

"I heard Larry speak at a CUNY conference several years ago, and immediately invited him to submit an article to Academe," says AAUP general secretay Mary Burgan. "I had no idea I was speaking to its future editor. I’m very pleased at his appointment."
