Academic Association Sets Pay Range for Adjuncts

The Modern Language Association (MLA) has adopted recommendations on the implementation of a controversial motion on adjunct faculty that was passed by the association’s delegate assembly in 2000. The recommendations are designed to draw attention to and help reduce what are widely considered to be exploitative labor practices. Noting that part-time faculty members offer institutions expertise, flexibility, and convenience, and that they are often paid poorly for their services, the MLA recommended a per-course pay range of $5,000 to $7,000, plus fringe benefits and cost-of-living increases. The MLA had previously surveyed its members to determine the average percentage of undergraduate courses taught by full-time instructors in different kinds of institutions, and will now proceed with a plan to publish a list of departments whose staffing practices are better than average in this regard.
