1940 Statement’s Endorsers Now Number 180
The 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure, issued jointly by the AAUP and the Association of American Colleges and Universities, has been instrumental in determining the standards for the academic profession and the mission of academic institutions for more than sixty years. The practice of endorsement began in 1946, with actions by the American Library Association and the Association of American Law Schools, and additions kept coming over successive years. Seven organizations added their names during 2001, bringing the total number of endorsers to 180. The new endorsers are the Chinese Historians in the United States, the Group for the Use of Psychology in History, the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, the Eastern Sociological Society, the American Jewish Historical Society’s Academic Council, the Society for German-American Studies, and the American Society of Criminology.
