AAUP Supports NYU Graduate Students
On November 11, during the fall meeting of the AAUP Council, Council members approved the following resolution:
"The AAUP is on record supporting the right of all groups of employees in higher education to engage in collective bargaining if they choose. Graduate student employees at New York University (NYU) have expressed their wishes on more than one occasion-in a petition seeking collective bargaining rights and in an election following a decision by the regional National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). On each of these occasions, the NYU administration refused to bargain by consent and employed administrative and legal means to delay a final decision. Now a historic ruling by the NLRB has recognized the right of graduate student employees at NYU to engage in collective bargaining.
As the Association asserted in its amicus brief to the board, there is no evidence that collective bargaining threatens academic freedom. The AAUP calls on the NYU administration to abandon further legal maneuvers and to honor its ethical and professional responsibilities and immediately begin bargaining with graduate student employees in good faith.
