Professor’s Gift Conditional on AAUP Salary Ranking

A chemistry professor has pledged $50,000 to Sweet Briar College in Virginia on the condition that the institution regain a 1-1-1 AAUP salary ranking. A ranking of 1-1-1 indicates that faculty at each rank at an institution earn salaries falling roughly between the eightieth and ninety-fifth percentile compared to similar institutions (in this case, baccalaureate colleges).

John McClenon, who is retiring from Sweet Briar after thirty-six years, said that he made the pledge because Sweet Briar consistently receives high marks in rankings of colleges, and faculty compensation should reflect that excellence. Sweet Briar’s faculty salaries achieved the 1-1-1 ranking several times in the 1990s but subsequently slipped.
