The AAUP Bids Farewell to Jonathan Alger

After four years of service to the AAUP, Jonathan Alger, the Association’s counsel, accepted a new position as assistant general counsel at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he is primarily responsible for intellectual property and media rights policy. He says he plans to work closely with faculty and other constituencies at the university to develop policies that protect the rights of creators while encouraging the dissemination of ideas. This approach, Alger stresses, goes along with the roles and responsibilities of a public university and coincides with the principlesof academic freedom and shared governance.

AAUP general secretary Mary Burgan cites Alger for the excellence and commitment of his work for the Association. "The Executive Committee of the Association’s Council unanimously voted a resolution of appreciation for what Jonathan did during his time with us," Burgan reports. "For those of us on the staff and in the leadership, his loss is the loss of a friend. But we are happy to think of him continuing to work in higher education, where his principles and goodwill will be as active as his understanding of the issues."

Alger says that his new position represents an exciting opportunity for him to apply AAUP-supported principles at a major research institution "that is at the cutting edge of many of the most important issues in higher education."

"I am delighted," he adds, "that the AAUP’s associate counsel, Donna Euben, a most capable colleague and a valued friend, will assume the role of AAUP counsel." Euben began serving as counsel April 1.
