Corporate Funding Conference

The AAUP will host a meeting in Washington, D.C., on May 12 to discuss the corporate sponsorship of academic research. Organizations represented at the meeting will include the American Society for Engineering Educators, the American Physical Society, and the American Association of Medical Colleges.

The AAUP has long been interested in the implications of such sponsorship for academic freedom and the working conditions of faculty members and students. Other organizations also have a continuing interest in this subject.

Because of the ongoing importance of corporate-sponsored research in different academic fields, and the likelihood that such concerns will loom even larger in the future, the aim of the May 12 meeting is to try to identify general principles that will help professors and institutions avoid conflicts of interest in procuring research funding. Also of concern are the obligations of professorial societies in advancing sound practices.
