New Member Benefit Will Appeal to Adjuncts

A new medical insurance program sponsored by the AAUP in conjunction with Wohlers/Seabury & Smith offers four options, including one likely to fit the needs of many part-time professors. Under the program, called Customized Major Medical Plans, faculty members may choose to set up a medical savings account or opt for a preferred-provider option (PPO), a traditional major-medical plan, or a short-term medical plan. The short-term plan provides a maximum of $1 million in medical coverage for up to three consecutive twelve-month periods and is billed monthly. Because many colleges and universities do not extend health-care coverage to adjunct or part-time faculty members, such professors--as well as those between jobs and recent graduates--may be particularly attracted to this option.

The program is not available to residents of Kentucky, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, or Washington state. The short-term medical plan is the only one of the four options available to residents of Alaska, Hawaii, and Maine.
