Our Programs

The AAUP has been protecting the rights of faculty and other higher education professionals for ninety-five years. Through assistance and advice to individuals, state and federal lobbying, amicus briefs, support for collective bargaining, and other means, the AAUP helps shape American higher education and ensure higher education's contribution to the common good.

Guidebook on Faculty Handbooks

Each year, the AAUP fields inquiries about what legal role a faculty handbook might play in resolving questions about employment or an administration’s actions. In response to these inquiries, we have developed a state-by-state guide to the legal treatment of handbooks. This guide is intended to be a quick reference for professors, administrators, and lawyers. It has previously been available for sale; now, in a time of financial and employment uncertainty, we are pleased to offer an updated version as a free download.
