Privacy Policy and Terms of Use

Privacy Policy

The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is committed to protecting the privacy of its members and, to that end, it has adopted the following policies about gathering and disseminating personal information on the AAUP’s Web site.

In general, you may visit the Web site without having to provide any personal information. However, in order to deliver certain online services, the AAUP may request such information. The areas of the AAUP Web site that require that you send personal information include those that involve membership application, annual meeting  registration, information requests, and store purchases.

The AAUP Web site is a VeriSign Secure Site. This secure-server software encrypts information, ensuring that Internet transactions remain private and protected. Your name, address, and credit card number, or any other part of your communication, cannot be read by a third party, as the information travels securely from your computer to our server. If you prefer, however, you may always choose to call or fax our office to conduct your transaction instead of using the secure online forms.

In  keeping with the site uses detailed here, we may distribute your personal information to third-party vendors authorized by the AAUP to help us carry out our mission, including, but not limited to, the mailing of newsletters, Academe, and ballots for AAUP elections.  The AAUP also discloses membership information to chapter leaders as part of organizing drives and occasionally rents membership lists to third parties.  You may always opt out of having your personal information distributed for non-AAUP uses.

We do collect non-personal information from all Web site visitors, including the IP  address assigned to your computer when you access the Internet and the address of the previous Web site that you visited, if you linked to our site from another Web site. None of this non-personal information allows us to identify or contact you.

Certain areas of the Web site use cookies to identify your computer. A cookie is a piece of data stored on your hard drive containing information that is not personally identifiable. This Web site’s cookies simply terminate when the user leaves the site or closes his or her browser.

The AAUP Web site contains links to other sites.  The AAUP is not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those sites.  Check the privacy policy of a Web site before you reveal any personal information.

In certain circumstances, we may release information to comply with valid legal process such as a search warrant, subpoena, statute, or court order, or in other special cases, such as suspected fraudulent or criminal activity or an attempt to breach the security of the AAUP or its Web site.

We have tried to create a privacy policy that is comprehensive, readable, and durable.  Despite our best efforts, we may find it necessary to revise.  Any changes will be made without prior notice. If you have questions or comments about our privacy policy, please contact us.
